New Town Architecture

The New Town was built in stages between 1767 and around 1850 and retains much of its neo-classical and Georgian period architecture.

About

Designed by architect, James Craig in the late 18th Century and a refreshing change from the overcrowded Old Town. He worked on a grid-iron pattern with 3 streets running from east to west, Princes Street, George Street and Queen's Street and elegant squares. Charlotte Square and St Andrew's Square at either end. It was extended in stages and today is the largest complete example of town planning from the Georgian period anywhere in the world.
