Edinburgh Bus Tours - Zero Emission – repowered

Edinburgh Bus Tours has successfully retrofitted several of our Euro VI diesel tour buses with fully electric zero emission drivetrains, partially supported by Transport Scotland’s Bus Emissions Abatement Retrofit (BEAR) Phase 5 fund.

Partnering with repower specialist, NewPower, we have reverse engineered a battery-electric retrofit solution for these diesel vehicles, which provides another option to that of purchasing new.

Reverse engineering a retrofit solution is a complex process that takes time and expertise to develop, and requires a significant financial investment. The diesel engine and gearbox are exchanged for new electric drivetrains, eliminating tailpipe emissions from these buses and increasing the number of electric vehicles in operation across the city which is a key part of our Driving towards Net Zero plan.

Our Edinburgh Bus Tours fleet operates mainly in the city centre, including the Old Town and Air Quality Management Areas. As the tour bus fleet also covers less mileage than a typical Lothian service bus and operates within a more condensed geographical area, these vehicles are ideal for pioneering this type of retrofit technology.
